Paver Calculator
Estimate how many pavers you need for a patio, walkway or other rectangular paved area, including waste, optional pallet quantities and material cost.
Best for: rectangular patios, walkways and paved areas using one rectangular paver size. For modular or mixed-size systems, use the manufacturer’s stated coverage or pattern information.
Estimate Your Paver Needs
Calculate pavers for a rectangular patio, walkway, or other paved area, including waste, optional package quantities, and material cost.

Extra pavers for waste: —
Paver coverage rate: —
Whole packages / pallets: —

This calculator assumes one rectangular paver size and uses the paver face dimensions you enter. A 5% waste allowance is a practical starting point for straightforward layouts, but patterns, borders, cuts, curves, breakage, and product-specific packaging can require more material. For multi-size or modular paver systems, use the manufacturer's published coverage or layout information. Currency selection only changes how your entered package price is displayed; no exchange-rate conversion is performed.
Start With the Surface You Actually Plan to Pave
The calculator begins with the finished paved footprint. Enter the project length and width, then enter the face dimensions of one paver. The tool compares the project area with the surface area covered by each paver.
- Patio: measure the finished paved length and width, not the excavation outside the paver edge.
- Walkway: use the total walkway length and the finished paved width.
- Complex shape: divide the project into simple rectangles, calculate each area separately and combine the quantities.
- Paver dimensions: use the face length and width of the actual paver, not its thickness.
The calculator estimates quantity from surface coverage. It does not attempt to reproduce an exact laying pattern or cutting plan.
Paver Size Controls How Many Pieces Cover the Same Area
A paver count is really an area conversion. Larger pavers cover more surface per piece, while smaller pavers require more individual units for the same patio or walkway.
Core calculation
Project area = project length × project width
Paver face area = paver length × paver width
Base paver count = project area ÷ paver face area, rounded up
Recommended pavers = waste-adjusted project area ÷ paver face area, rounded up
An 8 × 4 inch paver covers 32 square inches, or about 0.2222 square feet. That works out to approximately 4.5 pavers per square foot before waste.
Cuts Can Matter More Than the Raw Area
The calculator starts with a 5% waste allowance. That gives a straightforward rectangular installation some extra material for cuts, damaged pieces and small layout losses, but it is not a universal rule for every paver project.
| Project detail | Why it can affect extra material |
|---|---|
| Straight rectangular field | Usually produces fewer complicated cuts |
| Curved patio edge | More pavers may need trimming along the perimeter |
| Diagonal or angled layout | Can increase offcuts at boundaries |
| Decorative border | May require separate pieces and additional cutting |
| Complex pattern | Layout requirements may not match a simple single-size area calculation |
Increase or reduce the waste percentage based on the actual layout and the product or installer guidance for your project.
Piece Count and Purchase Count Are Not Always the Same
The recommended paver count tells you how many individual pieces the calculation calls for. Retail packaging can be different. Some products may be sold individually, while others are supplied by layer, bundle, package or pallet.
If you enter the number of pavers contained in one package or pallet, the calculator divides the recommended quantity by that package quantity and rounds upward.
- 945 pavers needed ÷ 360 per pallet = 2.625 pallets
- The purchase quantity therefore becomes 3 whole pallets.
- If each pallet costs $600, the optional material estimate becomes $1,800.
Use the packaging information for the exact paver product you plan to purchase. Currency selection only changes how your entered price is displayed; it does not perform exchange-rate conversion.
Worked Example: A 20 × 10 ft Patio
Suppose you are paving a 20 ft × 10 ft rectangular patio with 8 × 4 inch rectangular pavers and a 5% waste allowance.
- Project area: 200 sq ft
- Paver coverage rate: 4.5 pavers per sq ft
- Base paver count: 900 pavers
- Extra pavers from the 5% allowance: 45 pavers
- Recommended quantity: 945 pavers
If the product contains 360 pavers per pallet, you would need 3 pallets. At $600 per pallet, the calculator returns an estimated paver material cost of $1,800.
The 45 extra pavers are a planning allowance, not an exact prediction of how many pieces will be cut or damaged during installation.
This Number Covers the Pavers, Not the Whole Patio Build
A complete paver installation usually involves more than the visible paving units. This calculator intentionally keeps the estimate focused on the pavers themselves.
- Excavation quantity is not included.
- Base aggregate or gravel is not included.
- Bedding material is not included.
- Joint sand or other joint-filling material is not included.
- Edge restraints, drainage, delivery and labor are not included.
If the project includes a poured concrete section instead of pavers, use the Concrete Calculator for that portion separately.
