FLOORS & TILE

Tile Calculator

Estimate how many tiles and boxes you need for a rectangular project area using US or metric measurements, tile size and a waste allowance.

Best for: rectangular floors, walls and other tiled areas where the project dimensions and individual tile dimensions are known.

TILE PROJECT

Estimate Your Tile Needs

Calculate the project area, number of tiles needed, and extra material for cuts and waste.

Waste allowance helps cover cuts, breakage, pattern matching, and future replacements. Complex layouts may require additional material.

WHAT YOU’LL GET

A Practical Tile Estimate

Project Area

See the rectangular project area in square feet or square meters from the length and width you enter.

Tiles Required

The calculator uses tile dimensions in inches or centimeters, applies your waste allowance, then rounds the required tile count up to whole pieces.

Boxes Needed

If you enter tiles per box, the calculator also rounds up to the number of full boxes required.

How to Use the Tile Calculator

  1. Choose US Units or Metric Units, then enter the project length and width in the units shown.
  2. Enter the tile length and width in inches for US mode or centimeters for Metric mode.
  3. Add a waste allowance for cuts, breakage and layout adjustments.
  4. If you know how many tiles are packed in each box, enter that value.
  5. Select Calculate to see project area, tile quantity and optional box requirements.

How the Tile Estimate Works

The calculator first finds the rectangular project area in the selected unit system. It calculates the area of one tile from the dimensions you enter, then divides the project area by the tile area before applying waste and rounding up to whole tiles.

Core formulas

Project area = project length × project width

Tile area = tile length × tile width, converted to the same area unit as the project

Tiles before waste = project area ÷ tile area

Tiles to buy = tile count after waste, rounded up to a whole tile

Complex patterns, diagonal layouts, unusually shaped rooms and tiles with significant variation may require a larger waste allowance than a simple rectangular installation.

Tile Calculator Example

Suppose you are tiling a 12 ft × 10 ft rectangular area using 12 in × 12 in tiles. You include a 10% waste allowance and each box contains 10 tiles.

  • Project area: 120 sq ft
  • Waste-adjusted tile quantity: 132 tiles
  • Boxes required: 14 boxes

Metric equivalent: The same project is approximately 3.6576 m × 3.048 m using 30.48 cm × 30.48 cm tiles. With the same 10% waste allowance and 10 tiles per box, the calculator returns the same purchasing result: 132 tiles and 14 boxes.

Because boxes are sold as whole packages, the box total is rounded up even when the exact tile count does not divide evenly by the box quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

The right waste allowance depends on layout, cuts, breakage and room shape. Straightforward rectangular layouts usually need less extra material than diagonal patterns or irregular spaces.

Can I use metric measurements?

Yes. Choose Metric Units to enter the project dimensions in meters and tile dimensions in centimeters. Results are shown in square meters while the tile and box counts use the same calculation method.

Does grout width change the estimate?

This calculator is intended for practical material planning and does not separately model grout-joint area. For most projects, a sensible waste allowance is more useful than treating grout joints as reusable coverage.

Why does the calculator round up the number of tiles and boxes?

You cannot purchase a fraction of a tile or a fraction of a box, so the tool rounds purchasing quantities upward.

Can I use this for wall tile?

Yes, when the wall section can be treated as a rectangular area. Measure the width and height of the tiled section and enter those dimensions as the project length and width.
