How to Use the Flooring Calculator
- Choose US Units or Metric Units, then enter the room length and width in the units shown.
- Add a waste allowance for cuts, offcuts and installation layout.
- If the flooring is sold by the box, enter the coverage per box in square feet or square meters, depending on the selected unit system.
- Choose your currency, then enter the material price per square foot or square meter for an optional cost estimate.
- Select Calculate to see base area, waste-adjusted coverage, boxes required, purchased coverage and optional material cost.
How the Flooring Estimate Works
The calculator multiplies room length by room width to find base floor area in the selected unit system. Your waste allowance is applied to that area to determine the coverage you should plan to purchase.
Core formulas
Base floor area = length × width
Coverage with waste = base area × (1 + waste percentage)
Boxes required = coverage with waste ÷ coverage per box, rounded up
Purchased coverage = full boxes × coverage per box
Estimated material cost = purchased coverage × price per area unit. If no box coverage is entered, cost is based on the waste-adjusted flooring requirement.
When boxes are used, material cost is based on the purchased coverage represented by whole cartons rather than only the exact waste-adjusted room area. Currency selection only changes how the price you enter is displayed; the calculator does not perform exchange-rate conversion.

Flooring Calculator Example
Suppose you are flooring a 15 ft × 12 ft room with a 10% waste allowance. The flooring covers 22.5 sq ft per box and costs $3.49 per sq ft.

- Boxes required: 9 boxes
- Actual purchased coverage: 202.5 sq ft
- Estimated material cost: approximately $706.73
Metric equivalent: The same room is approximately 4.572 m × 3.6576 m. A box covering 22.5 sq ft is about 2.0903 m², and $3.49 per sq ft is about $37.57 per m². With the same 10% waste allowance, the calculator returns approximately 18.39 m² of flooring needed, 9 boxes, about 18.81 m² of purchased coverage, and the same material cost of approximately $706.73.
The cost is based on the full 202.5 square feet represented by the nine cartons, because flooring is purchased in whole boxes.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
The right waste allowance depends on room shape, plank or tile layout, cuts and installation method. Simple rectangular rooms often need less extra material than angled or complex layouts.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Choose Metric Units to enter room dimensions in meters, box coverage in square meters, and price per square meter. The calculator then returns flooring area and purchased coverage in square meters.
Does changing the currency convert prices automatically?
No. The currency selector only controls how the cost is labeled and formatted. Enter the actual local price for your chosen currency; the calculator does not use live exchange rates.
Why does the calculator round up the number of boxes?
Flooring cartons are purchased as whole packages, so the calculator rounds upward whenever the required coverage does not divide evenly by the coverage per box.
Why is purchased coverage sometimes higher than the waste-adjusted area?
Once the box count is rounded up, the total coverage represented by those full cartons can exceed the exact area you calculated.
Does the cost estimate include underlayment or installation?
No. The optional cost estimate is for the flooring material only, based on the price per square foot or square meter you enter. Underlayment, trim, transitions, adhesive, labor and other costs are not included.
Can I use the calculator if flooring is sold by square foot instead of by box?
Yes. The waste-adjusted area result is still useful even if you do not enter a box coverage value. Use the packaging or retailer information to decide how the material is actually sold.
