Mulch Calculator
Use this free mulch calculator to estimate how many bags or cubic yards of mulch you need for garden beds, flower beds, landscape borders, and tree rings. Enter the area, target depth, existing mulch depth, and an optional allowance. You can also compare bagged mulch with bulk pricing in US or metric units.
Best for: rectangular beds, circular planting areas, tree rings, and irregular spaces whose total area is already known.
Estimate mulch bags, bulk volume, and cost
Measure a garden bed or tree ring, choose your mulch depth and bag size, then estimate how much mulch to buy. Switch between US and Metric units without losing your measurements.
Estimates use geometric volume and the allowance you enter. Bag counts round up to whole bags. Bulk cost is based on the calculated exact volume, not a supplier's minimum delivery quantity. Delivery, tax, and installation are excluded. Currency selection does not convert prices.
A Practical Mulch Estimate
Planting Area
Calculates the planting-bed area from dimensions, a circle or tree ring, or a known surface area.
Mulch Volume
Uses the additional mulch depth and allowance to estimate cubic feet, cubic yards, or cubic meters.
Bags & Cost
Shows whole bags to buy and optional bagged or bulk material costs using your local prices.
How to Use the Mulch Calculator
- Choose US Units or Metric Units, then select the garden-bed shape.
- Enter the bed length and width, the circle or ring diameters, or your measured area. Set the number of identical beds or rings.
- Choose the target mulch depth. For a top-up, also enter the existing mulch depth; the tool estimates only what needs to be added.
- Select a bag size and set an optional extra material allowance for uneven surfaces and spreading losses.
- Enter your local bag price or bulk price if you want a cost comparison. Currency is a label, not a live exchange-rate conversion.
- Select Calculate Mulch to see the estimated area, volume, whole bags, bulk quantity, and material cost.
How the Mulch Estimate Works
The core calculation is mulch volume = surface area × added mulch depth. Both measurements must use compatible units. In US mode, divide depth in inches by 12 to convert it to feet. For top-up projects, added depth is the greater of zero and the target depth minus the existing depth.
Core calculations
Added depth (in) = max(0, target mulch depth − existing mulch depth)
Cubic feet = area (sq ft) × added depth (in) ÷ 12
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Whole bags = round up (cubic feet including allowance ÷ volume per bag in cubic feet)
Circular tree ring area = π × (outer radius² − unmulched inner radius²)
For metric measurements, use square meters and convert added depth to meters, giving cubic meters. Bag sizes are converted to the matching volume unit. Material costs exclude delivery, labor, taxes, and supplier minimums.
Example: Mulch for a 20 × 10 Foot Flower Bed
A 20-foot-long, 10-foot-wide flower bed has an area of 200 square feet. At 3 inches deep, the base volume is 200 × (3 ÷ 12) = 50 cubic feet, or approximately 1.85 cubic yards.
- Without allowance: 25 bags of 2 cubic feet, or approximately 1.85 cubic yards in bulk.
- With 10% allowance: 55 cubic feet, approximately 2.04 cubic yards, or 28 whole 2-cubic-foot bags.
- For a top-up: If the bed already has 2 inches of mulch and your target is 3 inches, the tool calculates just the additional 1 inch.
Bulk prices may be quoted in full or partial cubic yards, and some suppliers have a minimum delivery quantity. Confirm actual ordering increments before purchase.
How Deep Should Mulch Be?
For many landscape beds, a layer of roughly 2–4 inches is commonly recommended depending on mulch type, drainage, and the plants involved. Keep mulch clear of stems, root flares, and tree trunks; avoid piling mulch against a trunk.
If a bed already has mulch, measure its existing depth first. For example, when the target is 3 inches and 2 inches remain, you may only need to add 1 inch rather than applying an entirely new 3-inch layer. Check planting-specific recommendations rather than automatically using the same depth everywhere.
Mulch Bags vs. Bulk Cubic Yards
Bagged mulch is convenient for smaller beds and sites with limited access. Bulk mulch can be attractive for larger projects, although delivery fees and minimum order sizes may affect the total cost. Read the actual bag volume before buying.
| Mulch quantity | Volume equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 cubic yard | 27 cubic feet |
| 2-cubic-foot bag | 0.0741 cubic yard |
| 3-cubic-foot bag | 0.1111 cubic yard |
| 1 cubic yard in 2-cu-ft bags | 13.5 bag volumes (buy at least 14 whole bags) |
| 1 cubic yard in 3-cu-ft bags | 9 bags |
The calculator rounds bag counts up to whole bags. Its bulk cost estimate uses the calculated volume multiplied by the price you enter, not a supplier-rounded delivery order.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many square feet does one 2-cubic-foot bag of mulch cover?
At a 3-inch added depth, one 2-cubic-foot bag covers approximately 8 square feet. At 2 inches deep, it covers approximately 12 square feet, before an extra material allowance.
How many bags of mulch equal one cubic yard?
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, which is the same volume as 13.5 two-cubic-foot bags or 9 three-cubic-foot bags. To purchase at least a cubic yard in 2-cubic-foot bags, buy 14 whole bags.
What if my garden bed already has mulch?
Enter both your target depth and existing depth. The calculator estimates only the additional mulch thickness. If existing depth meets or exceeds target depth, the additional quantity is zero.
Can I calculate mulch for a circular tree ring?
Yes. Select Circle / tree ring, enter the outside diameter and the unmulched inside diameter, and the calculator excludes the center opening.
Does the calculator include delivery and labor?
No. Optional bagged and bulk cost fields estimate material cost only. Delivery, sales tax, labor, equipment, and minimum order quantities are separate.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Metric mode uses meters for dimensions and centimeters for mulch depth, and reports volume in cubic meters. The selected currency labels your entered prices without converting exchange rates.
