Wallpaper Calculator
Estimate how many wallpaper rolls you need using room dimensions, wall height, roll size, pattern repeat and waste allowance. You can also add a price per roll for a simple material-cost estimate.
Best for: full-room wallpaper projects using one roll size and a repeating wallpaper pattern.
Estimate Your Wallpaper Needs
Estimate wallpaper rolls using room dimensions, wall height, openings, roll size, pattern repeat, waste allowance, and optional roll cost.

Wallpaper roll sizes and pattern matching vary by manufacturer. Enter the dimensions printed on the product label whenever possible. The pattern-repeat field increases each strip length to the next full repeat, and the waste allowance provides an additional planning buffer for trimming, matching, damaged pieces, and layout differences. Currency selection only changes how your entered roll price is displayed; no exchange-rate conversion is performed.
Wallpaper Is a Strip Problem, Not Just a Square-Foot Problem
A roll may advertise a certain square-foot coverage, but wallpaper normally has to be cut into full-height strips. The number of usable strips that can be cut from one roll can therefore matter more than the roll’s total area.
Roll width controls how many strips are needed around the room. Roll length controls how many full-height strips can be cut from each roll. If the wallpaper has a repeating design, the pattern repeat can increase the length of every strip and reduce the number of usable strips per roll.
Measure the Wall Run Before You Measure the Roll
For a rectangular room, the calculator first determines the wall perimeter:
Wall perimeter = 2 × (room length + room width)
That perimeter represents the total horizontal wall run that needs wallpaper. The wall height then determines the minimum length of every vertical strip.
The optional doors-and-windows field is used to show a more useful net wall-area figure. The roll calculation itself remains strip-based rather than simply subtracting openings from the strip count. This is intentional because wallpaper may still be required above, below or around openings, especially when a pattern must remain aligned.
If an entire wall, large feature area or major section will not be wallpapered, calculate that area separately rather than treating it like a normal door or window opening.
Pattern Repeat Can Change the Roll Count Quickly
Wallpaper with no meaningful repeat can often be cut close to the actual wall height. A repeating design is different because each strip may need extra length so the pattern lines up with the previous strip.
The calculator rounds the wall height up to the next complete pattern repeat. That becomes the adjusted strip length used to determine how many strips can actually be cut from one roll.
For example, an 8-foot wall with a 21-inch pattern repeat requires an adjusted strip length of about 8.75 feet. A 33-foot roll can provide only 3 complete strips at that length, even though four 8-foot strips would theoretically fit if pattern matching were ignored.
How the Calculator Converts a Room Into Rolls
The calculator uses the dimensions you enter in a sequence of practical steps:
- Calculate the room perimeter.
- Divide the perimeter by the wallpaper roll width to estimate the number of vertical strips.
- Apply the waste allowance to the strip count.
- Adjust the wall height upward when a pattern repeat is entered.
- Divide the roll length by the adjusted strip length to find usable strips per roll.
- Divide the required strips by usable strips per roll and round up to a whole roll.
Recommended rolls = required strips ÷ usable strips per roll, rounded up
If you enter a price per roll, the calculator multiplies the whole-roll recommendation by that price. Currency selection only changes the displayed currency label; it does not perform exchange-rate conversion.
Worked Example: A 12 × 10 Foot Room
Suppose you are wallpapering a rectangular room with these inputs:
- Room length: 12 ft
- Room width: 10 ft
- Wall height: 8 ft
- Doors and windows: 45 sq ft
- Roll width: 20.5 in
- Roll length: 33 ft
- Pattern repeat: 21 in
- Waste allowance: 10%
- Price per roll: $45
The wall perimeter is 44 ft. The 8-foot wall height is rounded to approximately 8.75 ft to accommodate the 21-inch repeat. That allows about 3 usable strips per 33-foot roll.
The calculator estimates approximately 29 strips after the waste allowance, producing a recommendation of 10 rolls. At $45 per roll, the estimated wallpaper cost is $450.
The example shows why a simple square-foot division can underestimate wallpaper. Pattern matching can materially reduce the usable coverage of each roll.
Check These Numbers on the Wallpaper Label Before You Buy
Wallpaper products are not all packaged the same way. Use the dimensions and pattern information from the actual product rather than relying only on generic roll assumptions.
| Product detail | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Roll width | Actual finished width | Determines how many strips are needed around the room. |
| Roll length | Total usable length | Determines how many full-height strips can be cut. |
| Pattern repeat | Vertical repeat shown by the manufacturer | Can increase strip length and reduce strips per roll. |
| Pattern match | Straight, drop, random or other match type | Some matches create more trimming and waste than others. |
| Dye lot / batch | Matching production batch when applicable | Buying enough at once can help avoid visible color differences. |
When This Calculator Is Not the Right Fit
This calculator is designed for conventional wallpaper supplied in rolls and installed as vertical strips around a rectangular room.
Use the manufacturer’s own layout or coverage information for products such as:
- wall murals supplied as numbered panels;
- custom-size printed wallpaper;
- modular wall panels;
- wallpaper borders;
- complex rooms where only selected wall sections are being covered;
- products with unusual drop-match instructions or manufacturer-specific trimming requirements.
If the project changes from wallpaper to paint or wallboard, you can also use the Paint Calculator or Drywall Calculator for those material estimates.
